Outdoors

“Living indoors without fresh air quickly poisons the blood and makes people feel tired and seedy when they don’t know why. For myself, I sleep out of doors in winter as well as summer. I only feel tired or seedy when I have been indoors a lot. I only catch cold when I sleep in a room”.
Lord Robert Baden-Powell

Camping with Girl Guides is a memorable life event and one that is often remembered well into adulthood.  At camp, girls learn:  How to work as part of team and develop leadership skills; how to organise themselves, and their patrol, in terms of personal equipment, bedrolls and gadgets; how to store, prepare, cook and present food (and tidy up afterwards).  They also become efficient in setting up a tent and kitchen area and how to operate fire equipment safely and with efficiency.

Camping as a Girl Guide involves living with your friends, cooking your own meals and sleeping under the stars. The basics of pitching (putting up) and striking (taking down) a tent are discussed in a simple Camping Session.

Knotsknots

Have fun and watch the girls tying themselves up in knots in the Knot Session! Having a good knowledge of some of the basic knots is a valuable skill, not just for Guides but for life in general.

Make camp life easier and get creative. Gadgets are useful for keeping damp items off the ground (eg. shoes, tea towels) and helping you to organise your camp site. The Gadget Session is fun for all and, space permitting, can be done in, or outside, of the Guide Hall.

Camping Utilities

When camping with the Guides, girls will also need a dilly bag for their utensils and a sit upon for around a tarpaulin dinner table. The making of these can be found in the Dilly Bag Session and the Sit-Upon Sessiondilly bag
